Saturday went GREAT!

Here it is, that time again! It has been a long and exhausting day! My entire family decided to wake up sick yesterday and so I was on nurse duty all day. Needless to say I didn't get to work, so I made up for it today. I woke up early and went for a short walk around the neighborhood. I forgot to take my ipod so I can't say for sure how far I walked, but I was gone for about 15 minutes. When I got home I made breakfast, we had Baked French Toast Casserole! It was amazing!!! My kids acted like they'd never ate anything so good in their lives. Don't worry, it was a very healthy recipe that I got from one of my new favorite websites http://www.thegraciouspantry.com/ This website is dedicated to clean eating and I am hooked.

After breakfast I went to work. I clean houses for a living and really quite enjoy it. It gets me moving and it's never the same place or the same thing. I suffer from ADD so having a job that is constantly changing really helps me enjoy my work. Somehow it doesn't help me clean my house though : ) I cleaned for 4 hours while I totally jammed out to my ipod. There may have even been a few moments where I was transported back to the 80's and I was dancing while singing into my swiffer duster. Pretty much the coolest thing you can do when no one is looking! I had to work over the lunch hour so I took some almonds and a banana to snack on between scrubbing toilets and dancing like a 12 year old.

When I got home the Husker game was on and I am a very devoted fan. So I listened to the game while I made my husband and myself lunch. We had turkey sweet and smokey turkey burgers, but I didn't have any buns to put it on. So I substituted whole wheat pita bread, topped it off with Swiss cheese and baby greens. Had a handful of baby carrots on the side. So yummy! My husband was full of yummy noises, which made me pretty happy. I always know when he really enjoys something because he starts out with "oh, mmmm, baby, mmmm." Sounds pretty perverted, but I promise it's just food talk. LOL! After lunch I laid down in the reclined and watched the rest of the game. It was a super intense game and at the end when we score the winning touchdown I almost got sick. Cannot believe we pulled that off! Go Big Red!

So dinner time, I made ham and asparagus quiche. Not on the clean eating menu, but I cleaned it up as much as possible. Again I had a happy family, mostly. My youngest daughter was not thrilled with the asparagus. I figure if I keep putting it on her plate she'll eat it eventually. After dinner I had 3 miniature candy bars from my kids Halloween bucket. They were heavenly and I was satisfied with just the 3. I'm sure I shouldn't eat 3, but at least I'm not eating more than that! It could be a king size candy bar like last week! Baby steps!

So that was my day, not too exciting to say the least. Didn't get the workout in that I wanted, but I feel good about what I accomplished. We have to take the rough with the smooth and realize the small accomplishments in everyday. Today I made healthy choices and made my family happy. I not only feel good about my weight loss journey, but I feel good as a mother and wife, and that is a great feeling!

The truth about Halloween and my diet! It was all treats!

I have been avoiding this all day. But I promised to tell the truth and so I shall. Halloween was a disaster to my new clean eating diet. My husband, who is currently not on a diet or working out, asked me if I would like to go out to lunch with him Halloween day. He picked my favorite restaurant in town, a little Mexican place that has the best fajitas in the world!!! I was very confident when we walked through the door that I would make good choices. As I sat, the waiter took our drink order, and I was proud that I ordered a water. I flipped open the menu looking for something that would fit in...for the most part, with my clean eating diet. As I flipped the pages, my mouth began to water and my eyes kept jumping from picture to picture of the yummiest Mexican food on the planet. I lost the war, I ordered fajitas and ate every morsel, then my husband, being the gentleman he is, ordered dessert. There wasn't even a war, there was no second thought on if I should eat it or not. I just did. Sopapillas are the yummiest dessert ever and I'm pretty sure they are made by Satan himself.

I left there feeling really down on myself, but promised to get right back on track. Then I looked at the time, it was 5 minutes before my youngest was out of pre-school and 30 minutes before my oldest was out of school! We made a mad dash to get our youngest and an equally mad dash to get our oldest. We got home and suited up for some epic trick or treating(channelling Barney Stinson from HIMYM) We made it to two TOTing destinations and my kids decided they were hungry. We weren't even close to home and I didn't pack a single healthy option to take with. The kids decided they wanted Runza, which happens to be my favorite fast food place. It happened. The logic of...'I already blew this day, may as well just do what I want and start over tomorrow.' I ate, and ate, and ate. When we got home after a few more TOTing spots, I laid in bed feeling miserable and sad. I couldn't believe I had sabotaged myself like that. I begged my husband for more support and insured him that I didn't blame him for my bad decisions. Because I don't. I just made horrible decisions.

Some of you might argue that it was only one day and that it happens sometimes. But for me one day turns in to two days, and two days turn in to three days, and so on. Well here I am, feeling crummy, up 4 pounds, and I have been suffering with a stomach ache since last night. I feel like I have let so many people down. But mostly I feel like I have been self sabotaging a lot recently. I don't know what it is? The change of the weather? The lack of sleep? Or have I just lost my desire to continue on the way I have been? I haven't worked out in 3 days either. I keep finding reasons for not being able to fit them in. I did however clean up my diet tremendously today. So I hope to stay on this path. Maybe I will even talk myself into a bike ride tonight?

I want to be honest here, because I find it hard to be honest with myself about these things. If I can be honest here and it's out there. Then maybe, just maybe I will feel compelled, even obligated to give it my best. That way if I don't maybe one of you will kick my ass back in shape. Tell me to get up and get my butt going. I just don't want to give up after coming so far, and making so many people proud of me. Making myself proud. To gain back the weight I lost would be a real let down, for more than just myself. I would hate to see the look of disappointment and disapproval in my mothers eyes. I would hate to have my family look at me with pity and frustration. I can't do that to them, and I certainly cannot go back to being as unhealthy as I was.

So from here on, I will post my workouts here. I will post my foods. I will probably occasionally ask for motivation, and even help. I need just as much help, as I want and hope I am giving. So please, to any of you who are reading this, please help keep me accountable. I would really appreciate your help.

Waking up is hard to do

Do you ever have those mornings when you wake up and you just want to pull the covers back over your head and sleep an extra hour or two? Of course you do! We all do, right? Well today is that day for me. I don't know what it is, but I haven't been able to get a full nights sleep recently. I have been beyond stressed out about things, but stress has usually put me to sleep, not hindered it. I found myself being really quite grumpy this morning, I snapped at my 5 year old and put my 3 year old in time out for....something? I think it was more a time out for me then it was for her.

Breakfast was horrible, I didn't want to eat healthy food. Let alone cook it. I ended up going for a quick and easy breakfast. Whole wheat toast with pumpkin butter and a soy milk smoothie. It was pretty good, but on mornings like today I want to eat! I mean eat! I want eggs and bacon and hash browns and big gooey cinnamon rolls and the works. So my little tiny meal that I would never have chosen for myself a year ago, it just didn't satisfy.

That's the thing about stress and lack of sleep, for me at least. It makes me crave the things I can't have. I am a stress eater. Anytime anything goes wrong, or I don't feel well, or I'm tired, I eat. Of course I don't eat carrot sticks and lettuce and all that, I eat french fries, burgers, and nachos(ooooooh nachos! yumm!) I would have to say I am addicted to food. That is why the last 12 months have been probably the hardest of my life. Yes, other things contributed to it being a hard year, but denying myself that which makes me happy! You have got to be kidding me! I have slipped up, plenty of times in the last year. Sometimes it consumes me, the guilt from overindulging. Other times I figure I get a free day once in a while. But often those times where I say "It's a free day," turn into a free weekend, then a free week. Then I'm starting all over again.

I just started over a few days ago, clean eating is my new norm. I have enjoyed it so far. Even if I want a cheeseburger like a drug addicted needs a bump. I have never been good at "healthy" eating but, I am really motivated to stick to it this time, and have even got the family involved. They love the recipes I have made so far. That gives me hope. That maybe this is something I can actually do. It has only been going on three days now and I have already lost 2 pounds. Making my new weight 248! I am really happy about the 240's. It has been years, YEARS, since I weighed in the 240's. I was pregnant the last time the scale hit 240, with my first child. So around 6 years! I feel like doing a happy dance all over this house. But I think instead I will just go work out :) Maybe then I won't feel like crawling back in bed with my sick hubby(he has mono, he got it from me...we totally made out!)

Have a great Tuesday y'all!

The Truth About Me

Here I am, new to this world. Blogging! Something I basically told myself I would never do. But I feel like I have something to offer. I have a voice, and whether anybody listens or not, I am putting it out there. I am here to tell you the truth about weight loss. I have lost a large amount of weight and I have quite a bit left to lose. But I needed help and I frankly couldn't find it out there. So here I am, the help, the truth about what it is like to be as large as I was and what it is like to lose.

The truth about me is, I am the second of three children. The only girl, and I am the one who has always been overweight while my brothers have always been very thin. Lucky bastards! (I love them really!) I had a very rough life, and I went through many things that contributed to my weight. But I do not blame those events solely on my weight. I am the one who made the decision to eat and not exercise. Thing is I feel like it is too easy for people to put blame on something or someone else. Your mother didn't force feed you cake and tie you to a chair! Take some responsibility! It took me a long time to take responsibility for what I had done to myself.

Lets get back on subject ;) I met my husband in 2003 when I was 18, I weighed 155 pounds. I was thin, but I was not healthy. I was basically starving myself. I only ate twice a day, and when I did eat I wouldn't allow myself anymore than a small bowl of salad, and some sort of fruit. I worked out 2 hours a day and I spent a lot of time obsessing over calories. My husband, being the "Mr. Fix-it" he is thought he could help me. Unfortunately, he in a round about way took me from one eating disorder and tossed me into another. I am not blaming him, like I said I must take responsibility.

When I was 21 I was engaged to him and shortly there after became pregnant. My weight at 2 months pregnant, 230 pounds. In 3 years I had gained 75 pounds! I was out of control, and I could feel it. I am a control freak from the word go! Everything in my life is done with such precision, schedules, calendars, sticky notes. I have a plan for everything! I hate feeling out of control. During my pregnancy I began feeling more and more out of control and I slipped into a deep depression. Over the course of 8 months I gained approximately 50 pounds. I had my little girl in December, 5 weeks early due to preeclampsia. At my 6 week check up I weighed 270 lbs.

Over the course of 2 years I was a "yo-yo dieter," I worked out really hard for a few months, then gave up. I tried every fad diet I could get a hold of. I took diet pills, I even started starving myself again. I went down to 250 and then gained it all back. In 2008 I became pregnant with my second daughter, I was so excited to be having another child. I knew this time I would do everything right. I only put on 15 pounds during pregnancy and lost 20 lbs when she was born in 2009. My daughter was born with a very rare genetic disorder, there was nothing I could do to brace myself for the depression that set in after she was born.

From 2009 to 2011 I went from 265 pounds up to 335 pound. A gain of 70 pounds! I literally felt so much hate for myself that I ended up locking myself up from the world. I had this mind set that if I couldn't stand to look at myself, how could anybody else. It became such a lonely life. It was also a very unhealthy one. I got to the point where regular day to day activities where hard, sometimes almost impossible for me. I stopped wearing shoes that I had to tie, because I couldn't keep myself bent over long enough to get them tied, before I would start to black out. Walking from one end of the house to the other would cause me to be out of breath like someone who just ran a mile or more. Even getting out of bed proved to be exhausting. I was more than embarrassed, I was ashamed.

In the fall of 2011 my husband took a job on the other end of the state. Six hours away from my hometown, six hours away from everything and everybody I knew. Six hours away from my entire life! How would I start over in a new town, a small town. I was so scared I would not be accepted, I was almost afraid they would run me out of town. When we got here I was still in the mindset of not wanting to be around people, because I was ashamed and scared. When we got here we were really down on our luck. Financially broken. We moved in with my husbands grandmother as to help us with saving money and having a safe place for our beautiful children to live. Grandma had an old stationary bike sitting in the basement. In the area that we moved into. It taunted me. Everyday I walked past it, it called out to me. While I watched t.v., while I slept, while I played with my children, it was there. It knew what I needed, and eventually I broke.

I went to the doctor for an illness and found out my blood pressure was very, very high! I was scared. My family has a lot of heart problems and I didn't want to repeat the cycle. Eventually, I had to go back and do some blood work and diabetes screening. I was pre-diabetic and my blood pressure was still very high. That day I came home, I sat and cried. I cried so hard my ears hurt. I have never cried like that before. I feared that my girls would lose their mother and never really know who she was. They wouldn't know the sacrifices I made for them, they wouldn't know the love I have for them, they wouldn't know who I was or where I came from. I would be a stranger to them. A picture that was hung in their room. Someone they vaguely remembered being around but not really knowing. I needed them to know. It was in that moment I decided to make a change. It was in that moment I got off my 335 pound ass and got to work! I got on that bike, and I knew it was going to change me. I was not going to be that person for much longer. And I was right.

From October of 2011 to December of 2011 I dieted and worked out like a machine. I lost 35 pounds and I was very proud of myself. I started adding in more an more exercises and I began counting calories. I could feel a change happening and I was excited! For the first time in years I wanted to leave the house. I wanted people to see me. I wanted to tell them that even though I was big that I had lost a lot of weight and I felt good! Christmas rolled around and my family supported me with "healthy" gifts. I got running shoes, and two DVDs, a pedometer, a membership to the local gym. I was on top of the world. I rode out this high for about 4 months before everything came crashing down again.

In February, my husband went to the doctor for a sinus infection. This turned into a major crisis for our family. They sent him to get an ultrasound performed on his thyroid. A month later he was going to have biopsies done. Then a month after that he was having surgery and they confirmed our fears. He had cancer. At this point I had lost 50 pounds and I just stopped. I stopped dead in my tracks. I stopped dieting, stopped working out, stopped caring about anything. We got him through surgery and a few minor glitches he had afterwards. But the pain of watching him suffer through all of that got to me. It was a catalyst for my depression. I slipped up and put on 10 pounds.

Here it is, October 2012, one year later. Here I am, writing a blog, telling you, whoever you are, things I haven't even told my family. I have now lost 85 pounds. I am happy, but I am also aware that 250 pounds is still well above my healthy weight range. I have worries about what I will look like when I have reached my goal, I have worries about what I have done to myself, physically and psychologically. When I look in the mirror, I still see 335 pound Sheena. I do not see the 85 pound difference. I still shop for the heavier me, I can't grasp this concept of losing weight. How do I change my way of thinking? That is why I am here. So I can talk it out, get it out there, and hopefully if you are reading this, I can help you. That's the only reason I am here, to help.
